제니퍼: 네 여러분, 정말 날씨도 너무 따뜻해지고 완연한 봄이 왔다고 할 수 있는데요, 이렇게 모든 생명이 싱그럽게 피어나는 이 계절, 따듯한 봄바람을 맞기 위해 어느 정도의 고통을 참아야 하는 분들 계시죠? 저도 한국에 돌아오고부터 갑작스럽게 봄철 꽃가루 알러지가 생겼는데요, 저희 회사의 엔지니어님중 한분은 비염도 있나 보더라구요~ 저희 청취자님들 중에서도 저희처럼 꽃가루 알러지, 또는 비염으로 고생하시는 분들 꼭 계실 것 같은데요, 이럴때 영어로 어떻게 표현하는지 함께 알아보도록 할게요!

알렉스: Okay, so first of all, this is called ‘pollen allergy’ where people would easily call it ‘I am allergic to pollens’ or ‘I have an allergy to pollen’. Of course, you can also say ‘I have pollen allergies’ as well. Now, many people also call the pollen allergy as ‘hay fever’ and really, pollen is one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. On the other hand, the experts would usually refer to pollen allergy as ‘Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis’ which can also describe the ‘allgeric rhinitis’ that Jennifer just mentioned about as well.

제니퍼: 맞아요, 여러분 방금 들으신 것처럼 꽃가루 라고 하면 영어로 pollen 이라고 하는데요, 알러지, allergy 라는 단어의 복수 형태와 함께 간단하게 ‘I have pollen allergies’ 라고 하셔도 되고요, ‘I am allergic to 라고 해서 ‘나는 무언가에 알러지가 있어’ 라는 의미로 뒤에 pollen 을 넣으셔도 되요. I’m allergic to cats 라고 한다면’ 나는 고양이 알러지가 있어’ 라는 표현도 되겠죠? 또는 I have an allergy 나는 알러지가 있어 뒤에 to 그리고 대상을 넣을 수도 있는데요, I have an allergy to pollen 이라고 하면 ‘나는 꽃가루 알러지가 있어’ 라고 할 수 있겠죠? 생각보다 간단하게 표현 할 수 있답니다.

알렉스: Yes, Now, when you say ‘hay fever’, it’s basically referring to an allergy caused by pollen or dust in which the mucous membranes of the eyes and nose are itchy and inflamed, causing a runny nose and watery eyes.

제니퍼: 맞아요, 오래 전에 this morning English 에서도 간단하게 다뤄본 적이 있긴 한데, hay fever 라고 해서 이 꽃가루 또는 먼지 알러지를 가리키기도 한답니다. 물론 전문적인 용어로는 seasonal allergic rhinitis 라고 할 수 있는데요, seasonal 즉 계절의 allergic rhinitis, 즉 알러지성 비염을 가리키는 용어에요. 여기에서 이 allergic rhinitis 만 따로 얘기하면 서두에 말한 알러지성 비염을 가리킬수도 있어요.

알렉스: That’s right. So in the same sense as you described the ‘pollen allergy’, you can also say something like “I have allergic rhinitis or “I suffer from allergic rhinitis during these seasonal changes”

제니퍼: 그렇죠. 나 꽃가루 알러지가 있어 라고 했을 때 I have an allergy to pollen 이라고 했는데요, 나 알러지성 비염이 있어, 또는 환절기 비염이 있어 라고 할 때도 마찬가지로 I have allergic rhinitis 라고 할 수 있고요, 또는 ‘I suffer from allergic rhinitis during these seasonal changes” 라고 해서 ‘환절기에 비염 때문에 고생해’ 라는 표현도, 할 수 있겠죠?

알렉스: Great. So for the last recap, today’s expressions were regarding ‘pollen allergy’ in expressions such as ‘I have a pollen allergy’ or ‘I have an allergy to pollen’ as well as ‘I am allergic to pollen’. Also, the ‘allergic rhinitis in the similar sense.
