1) I've been to the US when I was young (x)
-> I have been to the US. (o)
- “have been” cannot be used with a specific point of time such as yesterday, at that time...etc. BECAUSE “have been” means “until now”
- also, “when I was young.” isn’t grammatically wrong, but if you are in your 20s... you still might be considered young by much older person. So, it’s better to say “when I was a kid.”
2) Can I have your sign? (x)
-> Could you sign here? or Can I have your autograph?
(Tae: what about "Can I have your signature?" What’s the difference between signature and autograph?)
- FYI, “autograph” is usually for famous people.
3) Don't make me hard (x)
-> Don't give me a hard time.
(Tae: 우리말로는 “나 만들지마 - Don’t make me. 어렵게-hard 이렇게 생각하면 별 문제가 없어보이는데...please Philip, go ahead explain to us.)
- Foreigners often joke about having seen this expression. “Don’t make me hard” can have a sexual connotation...! Be careful!
4) Summary/ Wrap-up
I have been to the US when I was young?
Philip: I visited the US when I was young. OR I’ve been to the US.
Tae:
Philip: Have you been to the US?
Tae:
Philip: I have not been to the US. OR I’ve never been to the US.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
“Can I have your sign here?”
Philip: Could you sign here? OR Can I have your signature here?
Tae:
Philip: Please, don’t sign here.
I’ll try another statement.
Philip: I signed there.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
“Don’t make me hard” 아니죠~
Philip: Don’t give me a hard time.
Philip: Give him a hard time. OR give her a hard time.
Philip: My co-worker is giving me a hard time these days.
