[English Trouble Shooter]Ep. 11 - Q2 "이과 문과"를 영어로 하면?

[English Troubleshooter] Ep. 11 - Q2 "이과 문과"를 영어로 하면?

1) 네, 필립쌤. 고등학생의 경우에 문과 이과를 영어로 뭐라고 해야할까요? 아니, 그 이전에, 미국 고등학교에도 문과 이과가 있나요? So, Philip, what are the English words for 문과 & 이과? Or, maybe, the first question sholud be, is there such a thing as "liberal arts major" and "science major" for high school students in the U.S.? There are specialized schools in most Western nations. In the UK for example, there are Grammar schools (more academic), Comprehensives (general), and Technical colleges (more vocational/practical in nature)

Tae: 그럼...문과나 이과는 그냥 말을 만들어 써야겠군요. Then, to explain Korean high school’s major systems, we would just need to make up some words. Such as.. I majored liberal arts back in high school.

Or I was a liberal arts student in high school.

2) 사실 국가별로 학년 제도나 문과 이과 같은 주요제도가 달라서, 우리나라의 고등학교 학생이 학교에서 보낸 하루 일과를 영어로 말하려면 영어로 1:1 표현을 찾기가 쉽지 않을 것 같아요. 이런 표현들엔 어떤게 있을지, 영어로는 어떻게 말하면 되는지 한 번 살펴볼까요?  Well, considering the difference of curriculars in public school systems between Korea and the U.S. or other countries, it could be challengeing for a Korean highschooler to describe a day at a school in English. Let's try to find those different words and expressions between Korean and English.

- 남중 남고 여중 여고 남녀공학 / boys-only school? All-boys school? Single sex school? Co-eds (what does Co-eds stand for?) Co-educational

- 장학금 scholarships

- 장학생 honor students: valedictorian / Magna Cum Laude / Summa Cum Laude / Dean's list / President's list

- 체육시간 PE (physical education)

- 양호실 infirmary

- 특활 Extra-curricular class

- 우수상 Excellence award?  (award for a student who has achieved high scores on exams)

- 개근상 Perfect attendance award? (award for a student who has never been absent)

- 선행상 Good conduct award? (award for a student who did lots of good things, such as helping other students)

- 봉사상 Service award? (award for a student who did lots of volunteer works)

- 준비물 Class materials? (Things a student should particularly prepare and bring to a specific activity of a class, such as a class for making sculpture, or cooking, etc.)

3) 마지막으로, 초/중/고등학교에서 쓸만한 간단한 영어 문장들을 좀 볼까요?

- 오늘 국어 몇 교시야? When is Korean class today? (Tae's thought: The Korena word "몇 교시", in English, which "time table" of the class, doesn't seem to exist in English. What do you think Philip? )

- 3교시 국어인데.  The 3rd class is Korean.

- 체육복 갈아입어야돼. We should change to gym clothes (or jerseys?)

- 미술 준비물 까먹지 말고 가져와! Don't forget to bring art class materials! (쉬운말 easy version: art class stuff!)

- 수업 땡땡이 쳤어? Did you skip the class?

{another note: USgrade  UK etc class/year      US+UK universityyear}

4) Summary

Tae: 자 그럼 오늘의 English Troubleshooter 두번째 질문. 정리해볼까요?

Let’s go over today’s English Troubleshooter? (Philip: Alrighty!)

Tae: 나 고등학교에서 문과였어.

Philip: I majored liberal arts back in high school.

Or I was a liberal arts student in high school.

(which is better, Philip?)

Tae: 나 고등학교 때 이과였어.

Philip: I majored science in high school.

Or, I was a science student in high school.

Tae: 나 남녀공학 나왔어

Philip: I went to a co-ed high school. (Tae: co-eds? Or co-ed?)

Tae: 난 여중 여고 나왔어.

Philip: I went to all-girls middle and high school. (Tae: Girls-only school=OK?)

Tae: 엄마 나 개근상 받았어!

Philip: Mom, I got the perfect attendance award! (Tae: 여기서 got 대신 receive를 쓰면 좀 더 공식적인 의미로, 수상했어! 란 의미로 볼 수 있어요. If you use the word “receive” instead of “got,” it sounds more formal, probably more suitable in official circumstance rather than talking to your mom)
