Jeollanamdo to Become Korea’s First Post-aged Society
Jeollanamdo has reportedly entered Korea’s first post-aged society stage that refers to a community where more than 20 percent of its residents are 65 and older.
In a recent figure tallied by the Ministry of Security and Public Administration of the total number of registered residents in Jeollanamdo, some 20.03 percent, or 380,000 out of the entire 1.9 million residents in the province were older than 65 years of age.
The total population of the province has been in a downward trend for several decades with a stiff rise in the number of senior citizens in Jeollanamdo as the population outflow from rural to urban areas continues.
As of August this year, senior citizens in North Jeolla and Gyeongsang province took up some 17 percent of the entire population with each province expected to enter the stage of post-aged society in 2018.
The United Nations defines a society where 7 percent or more of the entire population consist of senior citizens as an aging society, while communities in which more than 20 percent of its members are senior citizens is a post-aged society.
