Record breaking temperatures leave more than 3,400 patients stricken with heat related illnesses

A unwavering heat wave is dominating the country leaving many ill. Please brush up on the symptoms and diagnosis to avoid becoming a victim too.

Hyungjin Ro will tell us more.

At least 42 people have died in South Korea, as the country grapples with a record heat wave with unseen temperatures in more than 100 years.

This is the highest number of deaths since South Korea began officially counting casualties due to heat in 2011. Reportedly, more than 3,400 people have been treated for heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, since the end of May.

The government has ordered all public construction sites to cease work during daytime hours for the duration of the extreme temperatures and it is planning to focus on medical support to communities, including providing cooling systems to those in need.

Earlier this week, the government also cut electricity prices for July and August in order to ease the burden on citizens afraid of using energy-intensive appliances like air conditioners.

Meanwhile, in Gwangju and Jeonnam, the number of patients with heat related illnesses exceeded 330, and unfortunately 5 passed away.

The city has installed more than 200 shade canopies at crosswalks and has been operating sprinkler trucks to cool down the heat on the roads.

The national weather agency predicted that this heat wave might continue until the third week of August.
