Far-right activists held a protest in front of Dongsan Elementary School

A dozen far-right activists staged a protest at a local elementary school to complain that teachers took advantage of innocent students as part of the Chun Doo Hwan trial.

Jongmin Kim report.

Tensions grew as a group of far-right activists gathered in front of a local elementary school in a protest of students calling Chun Doo Hwan guilty.

When Chun presented himself at the Gwangju District Court last Monday, students from the school which is situated right in front of the court shouted shouted, “Arrest Chun Doo-hwan” and “Chun Doo-hwan, apologize!”. They also sang along to March for the Beloved, the song symbolizing the May 18 Democratic Uprising.

Members of a conservative group called the “Freedom Coalition” held protests in front of the elementary school at

The school immediately closed down its main gate in case of any accidents. Students were inconvenienced by a detour to the back gate and parents and teachers were anxious due to safety concerns.

Various media outlets explained that the event is more like a protest against students for chanting out ‘Arrest Chun Doo Hwan’ while Chun made a court appearance regarding a libel trial. However, a member of the group said at the site, they are not here to scare or take revenge on the students, but they are gathered to blame their teachers who involved innocent students for political reasons.
