Politicians urge the launch of the May 18th fact finding committee

Politicians urge the launch of the May 18th fact finding committee

There are growing calls to speed up the fact-finding operation for the May 18 Democratic Uprising as new testimonies have been unveiled.

Hyungjin Ro will tell us more.

Gwangju affiliated politicians are raising their voices demanding fact-finding activity to confirm the credibility of the recent testimony that former President Chun Doo Hwan ordered the military to shoot down citizens during its crackdown on the Gwangju Democratic Movement.

Democratic Party lawmaker Song Gab Seok said that recent claims made by a former intelligence agent for U.S. Forces Korea on missing people and their bodies require additional fact-checking.

He delivered testimony saying that bodies were thrown into the sea of Gimhae and that it is an important key in finding the truth that could not been solved for 39 years. He also added that Gwangju citizens expect the launch of the fact finding committee in the near future.

Lawmaker Chun Jung Bae of the Party for Democracy and Peace said the testimony is reliable evidence showing Chun Doo Hwan secretly came to Gwangju on May 21st, 1980 to order troops to shoot civilians. He also emphasized the necessity of the truth investigation resumption.

The fact finding panel was scheduled to be launched last September, but the launch hasn't taken place yet due to delays in the selection of the committee's members.
