Gwangju FINA World Championships expected to be the largest competition ever

Today, the 1-month countdown begins to the opening of the 2019 Gwangju FINA World Aquatics Championships.

Hyungjin Ro has the latest on the championships preparation.

The Gwangju FINA Aquatics Championships is set to kick off in less than 30 days.  Under the theme of "Dive into Peace," the competition will run from July 12th to 28th in Gwangju as well as in Yeosu for the open water swimming races.

The athletes will compete for 76 gold medals in 6 disciplines including swimming, diving, water polo, artistic swimming and open water swimming.

Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong Seop said at the press conference that as of yesterday, 6,285 athletes and officials from 196 countries had registered and with more countries expected to register as the deadline looms, the competition is anticipated to be the largest world championships ever.

However, he encouraged citizens to pay more interest in the competition stressing that only about 150,000 tickets or about 40% have been sold since they went on sale in January. He also revealed current procedures of construction for venues and accommodations which are almost ready to be used.

South Korea will also have its largest world championships delegation, with 82 athletes, 29 in swimming, 8 in diving, 26 in water polo, 11 in artistic swimming and 8 in open water swimming.

Meanwhile, the committee will keep asking North Korea to reconsider its participation in the championships.
