Athletes for FINA Worlds Begin to Arrive in Gwangju


As the opening of the FINA Worlds is nearing, athletes from around the globe are gathering in Gwangju.

As the countdown to the opening ceremony, this Friday, heats up, more and more athletes for the 18th FINA World Championships are entering into Gwangju. Many are arriving through Muan International Airport and the Gwangju Mayor was there to greet 23 Spanish athletes on the 7th with a welcoming ceremony.


The committee held a performance showcasing Spanish folk songs and some 200 Gwangju Citizen supporters welcomed the athletes by waving Spanish and Korean national flags.


With this welcoming ceremony as a beginning, the City of Gwangju will hold 19 welcoming ceremonies in a row for 750 athletes and officials from 120 countries until the 30th of July.


Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong Sup said he welcomes the Spanish athletes from the bottom of his heart, and he wishes for their success during the championship period. Lee also added that the City and the Organizing Committee will make all efforts to provide an optimal environment for the athletes.


As the athletes village opened 5th of July, some 400 athletes from some 25 countries including U.S, Netherlands, Germany, France, Japan, China and more countries are now training to deliver their best results.


The 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019 will be held from July 12th to 28th in participation with some 7,000 athletes from 194 different countries. After the championships, from August 5th to 18th, the 18th FINA World Masters Championships Gwangju 2019 will be held.
