gunning for gold in 200m breaststroke
Watanabe Ippei is seeking to win
a gold at the 2019 Gwangju FINA World Aquatics Championships.
The 22-year-old Japanese swimmer
arrived in Gwangju on Wednesday.
In an interview with a Japanese
newspaper, Ippei said he would like to set a new world record.
Ippei holds the world record in
200m breaststroke at 2:06.07 set during Tokyo Swimming Competition in January
2017.
He also has the Olympic record of
2:07.22 set in a semifinal during Rio Olympics in 2016. Ippei failed to keep
his pace at the final, and settled for 6th at the time.
