Gwangju as a UNESCO Creative City
The city of Gwangju recently became the newest member of the UNESCO Creative City Network’s media arts sector, making it the first Korean city to be appointed as a city of media art by the UNESCO Creative City network.
The city has announced that the UNESCO headquarters notified Gwangju of its final decision to recognize Gwangju as a membership city of the Creative City Network yesterday.
Gwangju was recognized for the various media art-related festivals and exhibitions taking place annually in the city and with the recent announcement, the city will create a master plan for the integrative operation of the city as a place that celebrates media art and its artistic, cultural and economic values.
Worldwide, only three cities such as French cities of Lyon and Enghien Les Bains and the Japanese city of Sapporo are member cities of the media art section of the Creative City Network of UNESCO.
Launched by UNESCO in 2004, the Creative Cities Network is designed to promote the economic, social and cultural development of cities through providing a world platform that presents each member city’s cultural assets and access to various expertise and information as well as experience.
Other Korean member cities include Seoul for design, Icheon for craft, and Jeonju for food.
