Claims for Designating ‘March for the Beloved’ as an Official Ceremonial Song through National Initiative Spread

According to a visiting scholar, May 18th related organizations and citizens of Gwangju should make use of the national initiative, which encourages the direct participation of the Korean people in proposing and revising the bills, in seeking the designation of the symbolic May 18th song, March for the Beloved, as an official ceremonial song.

At the academic seminar held yesterday at Gwangju YMCA, which focused on the symbolic song, sociology professor Roh Jin-cheol from Gyeongbuk University stated that Gwangju officials should adopt the national or regional initiative to gain recognition of the ‘March for the Beloved’.

Professor Roh insisted that the continuous neglect by the national government of the former democratic activists and Gwangju citizens’ request for recognition of the song can be overcome through nationwide participation by citizens who understand the importance of the song as a symbolic piece.

The symbolic song, March for the Beloved, which was sung among democratic activists during the 1980 May 18th Democratization Movement, was prohibited from being sung in unison during the commemorative ceremony this year and last, prompting fierce opposition from the citizens of Gwangju.
