Gwangju’s long-awaited construction project of the urban subway line 2 has taken a major step forward, as Gwangju officially announced that they have begun construction of the level 1 area after a controversial 17 years.
The first section, to be completed by 2023, is 17.06km, and connects City Hall to Gwangju Station, while the second section of 20km from Gwangju Station to City Hall will be constructed by 2024.
The first two sections will be connected to form a circular line, with Nam Gwangju and Sangmu stations available for transfer between lines.
The construction for the third section will begin in 2021 aiming to be completed in 2025, and it will be a 4.84km-long branch line between Baekwoon Square and Hyocheon Station.
However, some level of inconvenience is inevitable, so to reduce this for citizens, the city has prepared measures such as a traffic broadcasting service, billboards, banners and a change of the traffic sign system.
