POSCO plant explodes, five
people injured
At 1:14 pm on Tuesday, a POSCO
plant exploded and five people were reportedly injured.
The explosions occurred twice
within a 5 minute gap at the Ferromanganese (FeMn) yard next to the steelmaker’s plant at
Jeollanamado’s Gwangyang City.
Five employees were injured in
the incident and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. The
degree of injury status has not been announced yet.
200 people, including 170
firefighters, managed to put out the fire at around 2 pm.
Local residents said the
explosion affected areas outside the plant. Some said they felt a bridge 100
meters away from the site shaking, while some said metal debris was blasted
onto roads near the plant.
Fire authorities closed down the
bridge immediately due to safety concerns.
While the exact cause of the
accident is yet to be determined, it was reported that the explosion abruptly
occurred while testing an unused waste heat generator.
POSCO and fire authorities plan
to investigate the cause of the accident as soon as possible.
