Universities in Gwangju and Jeonnam are preparing countermeasures against coronavirus.

Fears over the new coronavirus appear to be spreading to university campuses in Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, as a large number of Chinese students are returning from winter vacation.

Jongmin Kim has more detail

Amid the growing concern about the new virus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, South Korean university students, particularly those with Chinese roommates, are growing restless as their Chinese fellows are returning to campus ahead of the spring semester.

According to Statistics Korea, the number of international students studying in Gwangju and Jeonnam reached 8000 this year, and most of them are Chinese

However, Individual universities have begun to take countermeasures. Jeonnam University, for instance, recently sent a text message to its all students, asking anybody who traveled to Wuhan after Jan. 13 not to come to school for 14 days. It also demanded that students and school employees always wear face masks on their way to school.

In a similar move, Honam, Chosun, Dongshin, Gwangju and other universities said they are considering delaying or canceling this year's freshman orientation events.

Also, they will require international students who will enter Korea in February to submit the medical documents issued in Korea. Currently, there are 970 Chinese students in Honam University, 854 students in Jeonnam National University and 397 students in Gwangju University enrolled and they will be coming back for the spring semester.
