Price of Rice Falls Drastically Before the Opening of Rice Market
Leading up to the opening of the domestic rice market to the international rice industry, a drastic price fall in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo is predicted, raising concerns for major damage to domestic farming regions and rice producers.
In the midst of the continuous downward trend in rice sales due to the globalization of menu items among individual households, the price of domestically produced rice is expected to see a rapid decrease once the domestic rice market is open to the international rice industry.
The average price of an 80-kilogram sack of rice sold in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo now stands at 159,000. This is the first time that the rice price has fallen below the 160,000 won mark since 2012.
However, with the scheduled opening of the domestic rice market later this month and the Korean rice harvest season in October, the price of rice is expected to fall even more drastically.
Jeollanamdo requested the national government to make an additional purchase of 100,000 tons of rice grown in Jeollanamdo.
