Gwangju city declares zero tolerance for rule breakers

Gwangju city declares zero tolerance for rule breakers

광주광역시, 코로나19 방역일탈행위 '일벌백계'

The Gwangju metropolitan government has vowed to sternly deal with violators of quarantine rules.

Lee YongSeob(이용섭), the Gwangju City Mayor revealed as such on Aug. 31st at the COVID 19 briefing. Lee said that "if the Gwangju communities collapse due to COVID 19, we lose everything."

Lee told his key aides during a meeting that they must take a zero-tolerance approach to protect residents from the new coronavirus.

The tougher stance comes after the spread of local infections and the collapse of the quarantine network due to false statements

The mayor added the punishable acts include intentionally or repeatedly violating administrative orders, concealing facts with false statements, causing spread of local infections by violating self-quarantine rules, intentionally spreading fake news, and impeding the prevention of infections in local communities.

Lee also stressed that there won't be any forms of support for infected patients who violated disinfection measures. This is including those who falsely testify of their transportation routes or violate self-quarantine measures.

The city has recorded more than 378 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak in the country and is currently grappling with cluster infections linked to churches, table tennis clubs and Gwanghwamun rally participants.

Gwangju is currently under an equivalent to Level 3 social distancing scheme which bans private and public indoor meetings of 10 or more people, and religious facilities and multi-use facilities.

It also calls for the mandatory wearing of masks on public transportation and the suspension of visits to elderly care facilities on top of basic guidelines on distancing in daily life.
