Calls
grow for heightened virus curbs as worst COVID-19 outbreak yet to come
A new COVID 19 flare-up in the country is creating a
sense of crisis that the worst of the COVID 19 pandemic has yet to come during
this winter.
Also, the 2nd level of Social Distancing has been applied
since Nov. 24th. Therefore, immediate elevation of the measures to level 2.5
of Social Distancing is reported to be difficult, according to the
government.
The sense of crisis is given the faster-than-expected
spread of the virus and continued sporadic infections across the nation.
Therefore, calls are growing over the implementation of further enhanced virus
curbs.
The number of new cases spiked to 583 today, the highest
in over 8 months, raising the total caseload to 32,318.
Among them, 553 were local infections, and 402 were
reported in the Seoul(서울) metropolitan area, home to nearly
half of the nation's 51.6 million population.
Health authorities are repeating their pleas for people
to sacrifice their year-end meetings and stay home to slow down the virus. This
is as the upward trend is expected to continue this week due to sporadic
infections from various groups, including military, workplaces and sports
facilities.
