Newly Admitted Freshmen in Local Universities to be Cut
A total of 9 universities in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo will see a major cut of 940 newly admitted students this year.
As part of the national government’s plan to reduce the number of freshmen and specialization projects, a total of 9 universities including Jeonam National University, Honam University, Mokpo University and Joseon University have been selected for financial aid of up to 20 billion won over the next five years.
However, the respective universities will be required to cut the number of newly admitted students at school by 10 percent and this figure is three times higher than the reduction rate in universities located in the capital regions at 3.7 percent and higher than the nationwide regional universities’ average reduction rate at 8.7 percent.
Jeonam National University will be required to cut the freshmen by 430 for the next two years in 2016 and 2017 with Honam and Gwangju University reducing the number by 183 and Joseon University cutting some 528 freshmen.
