법무부, '외국인 아동 출생등록제' 추진
S.Korea
to establish birth registration system for Korea-born foreigners
There
is a birth-registration system for foreign children currently undergoing
review. This is from the Ministry of Justice that such discussions were held
for those unable to be registered under the current laws. Our HyungJin Ro
reports.
The Ministry of Justice is planning to establish a birth registration
system for non-Korean children born in South Korea.
According to statistics, there are more than 20,000 unregistered foreign
children in the country who are vulnerable to abuse, trafficking and
exploitation due to limited public services.
Under the current law, foreign parents who are not legal residents cannot
register the births of any children born in Korea, essentially making the
children ineligible for government medical care and education.
Children's human rights groups said if the law is successfully introduced,
it would effectively provide legal grounds for all children born in Korea to be
registered and protected.
The ministry is planning to hold further discussions with experts and
advocacy groups before proposing a related bill to parliament.
