Special Law on the Symbolic Song, 'March for the Beloved' Proposed
A New Politics Alliance for Democracy lawmaker representing Gwangju Buk-gu A district, Gang Gi-jeong, recently proposed a special law that provides a legal base for the designation of 'March for the Beloved' as an official ceremonial song of the May 18th related commemorative events.
The special law allows the head of the central administration organization hosting the national ceremonial events to recognize and designate official ceremonial songs, further providing legal background for designation of March for the Beloved.
The national Patriots and Veterans Affairs Administration has excluded the symbolic song from official May 18th ceremonies since 2009 or replaced the song with different performances by choir groups and as a result has faced fierce opposition from local citizens, politicians and May 18th groups.
A National Assembly resolution urging fast designation of the song was passed last year with the agreement of ruling and opposition party lawmakers but the patriots and veterans affairs office ruled out the possibility of designation of the song, saying it lacks legal measures for designation.
