Honam KTX Revitalizes Local Tourism Industry
In operation for over a month, the Honam KTX has reportedly resulted in a surge of tourists to Gwangju and Jeollanamdo.
The number of tourists using the Honam KTX stations in Gwangju, Mokpo and Yeosu has seen a drastic growth with tickets leading to tourist amenities, such as accommodations and restaurants, sold out over the weekend.
The first phase of Honam KTX linking Yongsan and Gwangju Songjeong has reduced the total travel time by 54 and 30 minutes each for the Mokpo and Yeosu Expo routes from the capital city of Seoul.
In Mokpo, the daily average number of travelers increased by 21 and 17 percent for North and Southbound trains at 1,751 and 1,714, respectively. In response to this increase in visitors the city operates a nighttime city tour bus on Fridays and Saturdays with a plan to add additional buses under discussion.
Yeosu Expo Station saw a 54 percent increase in the number of passengers as the city is the home of many popular tourist destinations such as its maritime cable car, Odongdo Island and the Yeosu Expo.
