Indonesian Human Rights Lawyer Wins 2015 Gwangju Human Rights Award
West Papua-based Indonesian Human Rights lawyer, Latifah Anum Siregar, has won this year’s Gwangju Human Rights Award.
The special award will be given to Sombath Somphone, who is working at ‘The Participatory Development Training Center’ to promote welfare for farmers and the poor in Laos.
Ms. Latifah contributed to promoting peace in troubled West Papua where independence movements faced great hardships due to strict supervision and control by the Indonesian government.
State violence, such as illegal arrests, torture and homicides are reportedly being carried out by the Indonesian government against citizens of West Papua who are engaged in independence activities. Ms. Latifah has been engaging in protecting the independence activists and promoting human rights and peace.
The special award-winner Sombath remains missing after being kidnapped in 2012 as he worked with farmers in neglected rural areas to promote their welfare through establishing development and training centers to improve agricultural technologies.
The award ceremony will be held from 4 p.m. on May 18th at the May 18th Memorial Center.
