Aftermath of Sewol Ferry Accident: Residents in Jindo Ask for Helps
Residents of Jindo, who are still suffering from a drastic fall in sales revenues from fisheries goods grown in Jindo Island and the number of tourists to the region, have reportedly requested the national government to find measures to revitalize the local economy.
Asking for the government’s no.1 priority being the search operation for the 11 missing passengers from the ferry, the Jindo Island Pan-regional Disaster Control Headquarter members met with the Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and requested governmental countermeasures for damages in Jindo.
As a major production site of popular fisheries items such as abalone, anchovy and seaweed, Jindo saw a tremendous fall in the sale price of fisheries goods and the local tourism industry has seen a rapid decrease in the number of tourists.
Jindo Island, where the ferry accident occurred on April 16th that claimed more than 400 lives, and Ahnsan city in Gyeonggi Province, the home of Danwon High School that lost more than 200 students in the accident, have previously been designated as ‘Special Disaster Zones’ by the national government.
