The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has
decided to not display the painting, ‘Sewol Owol’ produced by an artist Hong
Seong-dam, at the special exhibition project for this year’s Gwangju Biennale.
The Gwangju Biennale Foundation held a
meeting last Friday and decided not to display the painting at the special
exhibition in consideration of the recent controversy over Hong’s artwork,
which is politically controversial and could possibility create a diplomatic
conflict between the North Korea and Japan.
During the opening ceremony of the
special exhibition held on August 8th, some 50 citizens and local
artists who participated in the special exhibition project held a group
demonstration in protest of the decision of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation
The 10.5 meter by 2.5 meter painting, ‘Sewol
Owol’, which focuses mainly on expressing the democratic spirit of Gwangju,
became the center of a recent controversy as it depicts the incumbent president
Park Geun-hye as a scarecrow controlled by the chief presidential secretary,
Kim Gi-choon.
