Construction Method for Gwangju Subway Route 2 May be Changed
As the city of Gwangju has decided to build Gwangju’s second subway route using the lowest budget possible, attention is focused on the construction method of the subway route.
A Task Force team for construction and a technical counseling team for Gwangju subway route no.2 will hold a meeting this afternoon to review three different construction methods: underground subway in shallow depth, elevated train, or tram.
As of now, the finalized construction plan for Gwangju subway route 2 by the national government is to build trains which will run in shallow depths of 4 to 9 meters underground.
If complete as scheduled in 2025, the underground subway will be operated on a 41.7-kilometer route at an average speed of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour.
Elevated trains run above ground while trams use 2 to 4 lanes on city streets.
