International Human Rights Activists to Learn ‘May Spirit’ in Gwangju

The May 18th Memorial Foundation has announced that it will host a ‘May 18th Academy’ featuring the participation of 18 human rights activists from 12 countries starting today for 15 days.

Participating activists have come from Asian and African nations, including Indonesia, Pakistan, India and Madagascar, to learn from the May 18th Democratization Movement and discuss various measures for the promotion of peace and the development of human rights as well as how to deal with state violence and trauma.

Activists will also make a stop at the May 18th National Cemetery to pay their respects to those who were sacrificed during the democratic uprising.

In addition, visitors will tour the Gwangju Human Rights Promotion Office in city hall, the Gwangju Trauma Center and various civil groups and human rights promotion organizations in different cities in Seoul and Paju.

Participating activists are also scheduled to take part in an International Academic Conference set to be held in commemoration of the 20th year anniversary of the establishment of the May 18th Memorial Foundation at the Seoul Press Center on August 29th from 1 p.m.
