Nationwide memorials held for Sewol Ferry victims

Today marks the fourth anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people. A series of commemoration events are being held around the country in the memory of the victims. Hyungjin Ro has more details.

Four years have passed since Korea witnessed its worst maritime disaster, which claimed the lives of 304 people, mostly high school students on a field trip to Jeju Island.

Despite numerous searches of the ferry that was raised from the sea last year, the remains of five people still have not been accounted for.

In honor of the victims, memorial ceremonies were held nationwide from Sunday. At the nation's southwestern port city of Mokpo, where the ill-fated ferry lies above water people gathered to pay their respects as the ferry area was opened to the public for the first time.

A government-led memorial ceremony took place in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do Province today, where most of the victims were from, with some five-thousand people in attendance, including Prime Minister Lee Nak Yon and the victims' families.

Several events were also held in other regions. In Gwangju, a memorial event was scheduled from 5pm to 8:30pm at the May 18 Democratic Plaza.

Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in, in a post on Facebook Sunday, asked the nation to remember the disaster and share their sorrow.

He promised to make the nation safer and said that the government will continue its investigation into the search for those who are still missing.
